Hints for Using the Rational Radio Live Stream PDF Print E-mail

Rational Radio 1360am brings 24/7 Progressive Talk to a worldwide audience via the net using our Live Stream at RationalRadio.Org.

The Rational Radio Live Stream has been tested to operate correctly using either Internet Explorer and Firefox on Windows machines. We are not aware of any permanent errors under the Macintosh (Apple) operating system.

*Most issues can be resolved by ensuring that your browser, media player, and operating system are up-to-date.

If, after updating, you continue to encounter problems listening to the Rational Radio live audio stream, here a few hints that might help you get going:

There are no known issues operating up-to-date versions of Firefox.

The most recent release of Firefox can be found here.

On older versions, Firefox users running Microsoft Windows may have noticed that clicking the link opened a new window, but the stream did not start. As most Firefox users will not wish to switch back to Internet Explorer a workaround may be the IE tabs plug-in which will allow you to open Explorer tabs inside of Firefox.

Installing the free Winamp media player will also solve this problem. After you have installed the player, clicking on the link will conveniently open the player and, after buffering the stream for a moment, will begin playing it for you without compromising your computer's security.

Alternatively you can download the Firefox and Safari for Windows plugin here.

Another option is to right-click the link and copy the URL location and open the Windows Media Player. Select File-

 Linux/BSD

Linux/BSD users have the option of installing the embedded media player for Firefox. Here are the necessary steps if your current distribution does not already contain the plugin:

Build & install a fully functional copy of MPlayer.

  • Download the plugin here.  I recommend grabbing the source tarball, however the RPM should work just fine, if that's what you're more comfortable with. BSD users may investigate the necessary package to install using pkg_add.
  • Either install the RPM, or extract the tarball archive that you downloaded in a temporary location, and then run 'make' to compile the plugin.
  • As root, copy mplayerplug-in.so into the plugins directory for Mozilla/Firefox.  For example, on my boxes, I install Mozilla in /opt/mozilla/.  So, I would copy the file into /opt/mozilla/plugins.
  • (Re)start mozilla, and click on Help -
